MONITOR YOUR SELF- TALK!

From Chapter seven the concept that caught my eye the most is “Monitor you Self- Talk. I thought this was interesting because I talk to my self a lot. Not in a weird way but more inspirational. When I have to do something that is hard and I feel like I’m to tired to do something I talk my self into things. For example right now I have a really bad cold and I’m exhausted from school and work today. I didn’t want to do homework but then I said to myself “you can do it Vanessa you might be tired and not feel good but tomorrow you will be able to relax without being stressed about school. To me I feel like I monitor my self- talk I don’t let it control me. I use self-talk to motivate me or make myself feel better. I liked this concept because I never thought of my self-talk as a way of communicating my emotions effectively.

  1. Hi Nessa,

I found your post interesting because I also find that I am guilty of Self-Talk. I usually do it when I am on a run. I try to motivate myself to keep going and push harder in working for something. It is a reward that I can complete the run (usually 5 miles). I can relate to you too because I tend to Self-Talk when I am doing my homework. I motivate myself to do the work by rewarding myself afterwards in whatever I enjoy doing with my free time.

  2. I do this as well and I think it is a positive part of intrapersonal communication. This is part of an internal monologue that I think most people have each day, and we have the power to make ourselves feel good and bad just like others do during the interpersonal communication experiences. I have found myself doing the same thing as you when I feel tired or as though I can't complete my schoolwork. I will get home from a long day's work and I want to put homework on the back burner. I will begin monitoring my self-talk by telling myself that my job is not my career, and the whole point of going to school is because I want to learn and find a career that I love. Then I find myself much happier than allowing the negative self-talk to win. The negative self-talk appears when we are feeling down or discouraged about something, and we have to monitor it in order to lift our spirits up again.

  3. Self talk is something that everyone experiences so Its good that you're discussing it. Its really good that you use self talk to motivate yourself because a lot of people talk to themselves negatively fiercely representing their insecurities. If you can take something like self talk and use it to motivate yourself it can actually turn into a great tool that will keep you moving forward. Self talk is great as long as you are using it positively.
