THE SELF IS MULTIDIMENSIONAL

I thought that the concept of “The Self is Multidimensional” was interesting because when you think of self you think of individual or one. However this idea say that the self is more than one thing cause of how we think of ourselves. When we start to describe ourselves there is multiple things we think of like how you look, think, act, your personality everything that makes YOU. There is so many thing we use to describe ourselves that I never thought about. For example when I start to think of who I am what comes to mind is multiple words that would express me: polite, talkative, short, a sister, a daughter, sensitive, upbeat, the list can go on and on.....  Not just for me but for everyone there is no one word that can be used to really show who we are. Therefore self can mean many things like physical self, cognitive self, self-concept, social self the list can keep going to describe one persons self.

  1. This week’s chapter was a favorite for me because it touched on so many aspects of the self. I agree with you that we never really think of ourselves as multi-dimensional. When we are asked to describe ourselves, a whole list of words come to mind, but we see it as one thing. In reality, it lists out many aspects of ourselves that come together to make who we are. I thought it was interesting that the book broke down the aspect of self into categories like physical self or cognitive self. After reading this section, I can totally see how the self is multidimensional. I suppose it is like being asked to pick one word that would sum up who you are. It would be really difficult because each individual has many skills, backgrounds, and identities that make us who we are.

  2. I agree with the both of you! The self really is complicated. Such a simple word and only one quantity exist of each person yet it's so multidimensional. There are so many aspects to each person and so much to consider it almost feels like it's hard to cover every angle of a person if one was to discuss it in detail during a presentation. Each part of us develops so differently and at different times that it feels like we're always, always discovering and rediscovering who really are. I guess life wasn't kidding when it said "life's a journey" cause it really is. We never really stop learning about ourselves.

  3. Who we are is so much more than any one or even any 100 concepts. Who we are is the integration of an endless variety of specific characteristics that contribute to the way we act. To cover every aspect of a single person’s personality would be impossible due to the unique way that each person has experienced life. Another thing to consider is that the self changing is an ongoing process that will continue throughout life until death. Everything around us shapes us and who we are. The only way to stop this would be to eliminate one’s five senses.
