Pseudolistening is when someone pretends to listen when someone is talking to them. I thought this was interesting because I do this a lot. Not because I’m trying to be rude or intentionally doing it either. Sometimes when someone is talking and just keeps ongoing I get bored and start to day dream; However, I act like I’m listening and nod but my mind is completeley in another place. I try not to be rude and let the other person talk but I would rather pretend to list then to just be blunt and say they are boring. Psuedolistening can also be used for good like the book stated with the flight attendent. I thought the example was really funny because I work as a cashier and it’s true people say the weirdest thing or they just won’t stop talking. I try not to be rude and pretend to listen but really I’m not and just trying to do my job. I do this all the time and I had no clue there was a word for it!
Great post!
ReplyDeleteI am too guilty of pseudolistening. I feel guilty telling a person bluntly "Hey I don't want to talk to you b/c your a bore". I am sure at your job you get a ton of people that just start up random conversations with you and though you want to tell them to be quiet and move on you have to sit there and smile and not be rude. I had a similar job that dealt with customers all the time. It seemed I would get people that had no one to really talk to coming up to me and telling me their life stories! Def a time that I go into pseudolistening! =)
